Listening to Willie Nelson and Lee Ann Womack - Mendocino County Line

Uncle Yeo is a fan of country music! For me, I guess I listen "here and there". Basically, no one in my entire group of friends, or people that I know actually appreaciate Jazz. Country is like bigger No No. But its so nice! I think people should learn to listen to genres of music out of the standard rock pop alternative heavy metal outfit. There's still very nice reggae, cultural and aboriginal music around. Didjeridoo music anyone?

Oh hi! Ya, I don't think you want to be stuck patrolling on the sea seriously! I've been there like 7 weeks and I find it oh so boring and dull and dry seriously! I love the sea too! I enjoy it as a "different" sort of workplace environment. But seriously, Singapore's water isn't BLUE, or even Crystal Clear. Its in the color of light green mucous! (ew!) Seriously. The water is damn dirty since all our treated waste gets discharged by the PUB into the sea, giving it this dirty greenish hue.

I like the sky too. Nature, they say, is God's greatest evangelist. I like it especially during the sunsets and sunrises, when we can postion our boats for the best possible view. I love it especially when the shade of blue from the sky and the shade of dark blue from the sea, merge at the horizon, such that you don't know the division from the sky and the sea. Ya, I get to do crazy things like walk on Pulau Hantu or Pulau Bukom if the crew commander allows it, as opposed to doing push ups on the island of Doom.

But seriously, its SO BORING on the boat. There's only so much you can talk. So much you can do to entertain yourself. Then theres the motion of the sea? At times when its calm it really lulls you to sleep like a baby in the cradle. At other times, it is so rough you get seasick, nauseous and just feel like puking (although I thank God that I don't suffer from seasickness). Then there the myriad of choking fumes onboard from the engine room, the toilet, the cleaning agents, the gun lubricants, rotting food that we can't clean away, as well as all the electronics onboard. Coupled with a FREAKING COLD aircon, it makes a perfect recipe for an on board gas chamber. The fumes on board can make me feel dizzy when I just go into the boat at base. Its terrible I tell you.

Then in Singapore, you can't afford to fall asleep at the Helms, even though its very easy to get tired due to the glare plus the rocking motion of th boat. There are just too many ships in our crowded anchorages and port limit ship queues and many many navigational dangers as well as hazards to shipping in our waters. I have to be very careful when i steer the boat since you never know when you might get grounded, or kena langah by some vessel that can't see you! And the vessels that stop by Singapore's waters are usually carrying dangerious caro, like crude oil, natural gas, petrol, explosives, etc. So we have to be wary for any danger that might occur. Besides, everytime I have to take the lunch box at sea, I might just drop in and drown. Though I'm a relatively good swimmer, but the current can just drag you away and pull you under if you fall overboard. You have the fear of the sea even though you can swim well.

Its really a different ball game on the sea. Coast Guard is slack, but it certainly isn't very exciting! And then there are dangers all around. Don't forget, we are Coast Guard. Who knows when I might be involved with an armed confrontation with pirates? or sea robbers? I'm just in a peace time organistaion that employs big guns and shoot to kill tactics. Nothing glamourous about death really. You'd be better off going to Clifford Pier, paying one of the Ah Pehs there about 100 bucks or so and ask him to take you on a tour of all the off shore islands. That'll be more fun, really. You'll have the whole day to see whatever off shore islands you wish to see and really have a free reign of you activities.

At the end of the day, I'm doing my NS. And every guy I know, given a choice. Would rather go to university, or out to work than to do NS. I'm just damn bloody blessed to end up on this kind of NS. Not being stuck in an army camp, under army regimentation, under stupid army rules, doing training and more training, getting punished for senseless rules. For that I'm thankful. But really, I think all the guys in ACJC would gladly agree not to do NS. For the effort that we put in. Knowing that regulars are earning like 5 times more than us... And we do more work compared to them. It just feels rather unfair and discriminatory at times.

Yes, I've griped enough.

cars and conspiracy

I have my Advanced Theory of Driving test on 2nd of Oct. I have not even opened the book yet! I don't think its going to be that hard lah. I've got 10 days plus to slowly go through the book here and there. I think the theory is quite simple and basic. Its the PRACTICAL that worries me! Sometimes, I really wonder how people park their cars in super tight crannies and crevices. And how impatient drivers SQUEEZE their way through traffic jams by cutting lanes here and there. Seriously, in Singapore, if you're not an aggresive driver, you're just going to suffer at the wrath at all these crazy taxi drivers as well as impatient MALE DRIVERS that honk the horn like free. Ok lah, blame the LTA for their lousy road management skills as well.

Notice how if you're stuck at a red light in a traffic jam. For the rest of the entire trip, you'll be travelling through roads seeing the lights change from green to red? I don't know how they do the timings. But I think it sucks seriously. Nothing sucks more than when you need to rush through peak hour only find that every single traffic light is RED. Its like, once the light turns green on your side, you can see the next one turn red. I think its really irritating to travel in a "start stop start stop" manner.

I've noticed this more than enough times when I need to rush through heavy traffic in a taxi. I spend more time waiting at the red light than actually travelling. And its kinda weird that in Singapore, especially during peak hour. The lights stay green for like 20 seconds and then go red for like 2 minutes? Its really weird. Perhaps its a gahmen conspiracy to force impatient motorists to use roads equipped with ERP Gantries! Or then again, we can blame the LTA.

Singapore is really the only place in the world, that when you stop at one traffic light. You can see the next TWO traffic lights ahead. You don't even get that in NEW YORK CITY!, which is even more congested! Nonsense man! All I want to do is to go from Point A to Point B. Heavy slow traffic is ok with me. But not having to stop at every single traffic light that happens to be RED for some weird reason during peak hours and green continually during off peak hours. And yes, everyone needs to save money instead of paying 2.50 to drive through an EVERYDAY ROB PEOPLE gantry, during these "tough economic times".

Dont' forget the PWD (Purposely Want to Dig), forever doing road works, digging up roads at the weirdest of locations to do everything from lay cables to "wash the sewers". And somehow, it always happens on the most congested roads don't you think? So a 3 lane road way somehow effectively becomes a 1 lane one way road. Nonsense man! Can't they dig AT NIGHT instead of during PEAK HOURS?

Ok enough of griping against the gahmen bodies that really only add to the road congestion, not relieve it. Mum says I complain about the gahmen like an old man about to get the CPF. She tells me to enter politics to "change it my way". But really, who wants to sit on the opposition bench and get roasted day in and day out by the PAP right?

So as for my Final Theory Driving Test. I don't think I'll have problems trying to pass it. I'll aim to get my license by say, latest End of January next year. Although I'll try to get it by Christmas. It'll be a good christmas present for myself I think. Then I can be the 3rd person in my class who finally gets a driving license. The first being Thomas the Pro, and then Lynnie! Oh yeah, then I can drive to work as well as church!

I should really learn to stop complaining. Well I don't complain out loud, but I do bitch about it here in my blog. I'm just a "complainer in thought". But really, who isn't?
