Listening to Nothing
for Xin
=)
Just that, I've known your brother for so long. I've taken almost everything his said at face value. Perhaps not for "some things" now. Haven't talked to him on ICQ in ages. Been at least 5 months already. It would be good to just exchange words with him one of these days in the future. He is after all, one of the key people in my secondary school life.
As for google. I found that out the hard way. How come there are only 2 returns to your name. One is your class blog. The other is my blog! Somehow, when I wrote about you. It seemed that google did a cache of my blog and somehow, you happened to be bored enough to search for your name at around that period of time.
Well, what's past is past. Have to move on now.
mars
I didn't get to see the closest approach of mars in 60 000 years. Guess I will have to contend with the still image shots from Nasa or the local astronomy coverage. I've always loved astronomy - even when I was a kid. I'd just spend hours gazing up at the night sky at night and early in the morning, just to admire the beauty of the universe. Makes me wonder sometimes, how infinitely big things around us are, and how small we sometimes can really be.
As for my pals. I'm very fortunate to have Boon Leong and T Squared to talk to about astronomy. Its not just the star gazing part. Boon is able to provide the detailed mathematics of the courses of the planets and how Einstein's general theory of relativity differs from Newtonian gravitation. T Squared, on the other hand, can explain complex things like Riemann sums and integrals, Schwarzkopf equations of unity and the Pauli Exclusion principle. Even Ivan, a noted chemistry and economics guru, can explain to me the special theory of relativity, with the detailed mathematical proof as well as derive the uncertainty principle.
As for Wesley, one of the big shots in the science council. He can explain the galaxy expansion, hubble constant, red/blue shift of electromagnetic radiation as well as the complex quantum mechanics of neutron stars, black holes and other assorted thories. And all this is just for fun! Just over coffee at Starbucks with other people from ARTS who just want to know a little bit more about astronomy. I'm really blessed to know such people.
Perhaps, one day. Boon Leong will derive the formula for the GUT. The GRAND UNIFIED THEORY of physics! Who knows? I'm sure God will give him the wisdom to do such stuff or its equivalent in this lifetime.

I watched the last day of the revial conference at church online. As usual, no tickets to enter. The broadcast was marred for a few minutes by very heavy net traffic. It really totally broke and destroyed my concentration on the sermon and by the time the connection was restored. I had missed a sizable chunk of the message.
I was watching it on broadband - 300 Kilobits per second. Traffic became so heavy that the server defaulted me to 166 kilobits and later, a measly 8 kilobits! I could hardly see anything, although the sound quality was still fine. Just that, all these "changes" really disrupted my concentration.
All I can say is that I really missed out on a very good message. Apparently, church has undergone a change today. From a faith based church to a "missions based church". And I missed out on the blessing! Heart Pain can?! Nothing actually makes me happier than going to church and learning more about the Bible.
I know that's like so weird and so contradictory to what most people have in mind about God. But that's the truth. And that's how I honestly feel even given my poor character. I'm still childish, immature, silly, etc. But I'm just trying to sit still and listen and really just focus on what's going on in church. Without God, my life really has no meaning at all.
Well, i expect the atmospher in church to be very much different this sunday when I go for service. Just that I missed out on a life changing opportunity. There's only so much of God that you can get via a Net broadcast.
sigh
Well, I won't feel too miserable about it. It wasn't exactly my fault that the connection was so bad! Just have to get ready for tomorrow's sentry duty. Time to salute tonnes of senior officers with attitude problems. They won't drive in until you've saluted them. Talk about "playing rank" man! I'll just wear my issued hush puppies shoes to make the effort of standing for 3 hours at one shot easier for me.
Well. The good thing about sentry is that I can go to base later than normal. And I'm the first to leave. So that's the perks of the job. =)
Check out the IPAC site. Its a site where you can find actual pictures of the heavens as taken by professional astronomers that come in GARGANTUAN sizes. Think - 5 MB for just one JPEG file. You need a good broadband connection plus lots of RAM to view the site in its entirety. Best to surf the site in the early morning, when it will be faster. The pictures taken of the heavenlies are beautiful! Absolutely stunning at times!
The best thing is that the whole project is basically done by undergraduate students from the CALIFRONIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY''S JET PROPULSION LABORATORY. The people in CalTech are so smart, that even NASA trusts them to help out control space equipment worth hundreds of millions of dollars. I heard that the people in there are so smart, even Winston Chin couldn't make it there, much less Boon Leong.
And this is coming from Boon himself!
