Listening to Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basic - Ain't Misbehavin'
I was so inspired to take up piano after yesterday's short worship session at Charle's house (my cellgroup Charles, not Rev. Charles). Well, so I discovered I'll need a piano mastery of at least grade 7 to play a couple of Final Fantasy Piano songs. My moods really contrast in music, whereas the jazz I listen to is that of the happy, joyful and nonsensically funny kind, the piano solos that I like are all of the rather depressing variety. An internal "balancing" preference of sorts? Perhaps. Perhaps not.
Anyone out there willing to teach a poor, demented, impatient and blur NSman how to prod the ivories? The piano is truly such a beautiful instrument. I used to take lessons many many years ago when I was in primary 1, but lessons were stopped when Dad ran into financial difficulties. Thinking back, had I continued, I might be a grade 8 or a diploma holder in the art of pressing the keys. I observe that tremendous dexterity in the fingers are required especially for the higher level songs, where the chord book is seemingly filled with nothing more than chunks of black bars.
I happened to pick up an old copy of Les Miserables at Charle's house and found it to be thoroughly enthralling. I never knew literature could be so enjoyable, especially in the light of completely open interpretation as well as understanding. I feel that there is really no actual absolute right or wrong in understanding literature. The beauty is in the words being able to give double or triple meanings and how it affects one's personal interpretation of the story.
I should have gone to ARTS instead. If only ACJC could offer me an odd subject combination like Literature, History, Maths and Further Mathematics. Too bad, from what I've heard, FM will soon be phased out of the syllabus in its entirety. I have a much greater interest in History rather than geography, after all, the study and understanding of the past can help us better intepret the present and perhaps as well, predict tidbits of the future.
One thing that made me sit up and think, was in yesterday's papers. Some quote that went on the likes of "if only students would chose subjects that they had a passion for, rather than choosing subjects that they are good at scoring at". Am I choosing my university majors only because I am good at the subject, or do I have a genuine interest as well as passion for the subject? I guess its a mixture of both for mathematics and just purely interest for political science. But certainly, do people chose to go to the engineering faculty only because they know they can do well in the subject, or because they really want to become an engineer? Or simply because they were shut out of their other choices?
Its quite sad to say that sometimes, people do label the engineering faculty as a "dumping ground". Its a half-truth, but it does make one analyse the whole issue of education. Our country's education system is a terrible rat race. Even if you are the king rat at the end of the day, you are still a rat, not much in difference from the rat that finishes last.
