Go Back To The Past

Go Back To The Past

A Few days early from the November Update. Once again I wonder who reads this blog now. I've realised that over time, due to the fact that I don't do so much in life, I tend to remember certain details better. At the same time, I realise and accept the fact that certain memories we have get locked in, until a particular "trigger" brings it out. As I ponder the past times of secondary school, and surf through networking sites like friendster. I realise that many people have moved on in life and have certainly changed so greatly. If all of us were gathered into one room 10, 20 or 40 years down the road to talk, share and see how our lives have turned out. I'd figure that it would be quite so rather "interesting".

I remember a long time ago, when I was somehow or other a Prefect of those days in Barker. My only duties were pretty simple - book the jokers that came late to school in the mornings. I didn't really have to do much. Perhaps that of a slacker. Times have come so quickly an about turn. It is almost half a decade already. Sometimes I wonder, "don't it make you sad to know that life is more than who we are". How do we measure worth? Much more self worth. Time flies so quickly. We grew up too quickly, now at times, there's nothing to believe. Only to recant and recall the memories of a scant life that has now passed. It would be strange if someday, all of us could sit down and write down a book on the journey of our lives. Wouldn't it be interesting? Wouldn't it be a story so personal, so frank, so honest that it would just shake off the literature qualities of rhetorical analysis and philosophical discourse for some time? I wonder.

I remember at as a prefect, there is always a time of an "investiture". Where as a boys' school, we'd be rather excited to say the least to invite prefects from other girls school's over. Whether it be reasons that there are girls arriving in an all boys school or for the matter of the uniform fetish and the like. I leave that to you to individually ponder and figure out. Life is strange and interesting. It turns a full circle every now and then and I just really wonder at times how things will be. Doth not social clubbing and pubbing extend our social circle in a vast manner - yet I wonder. By what desire and virtue of friends do we achieve in this life time? A beautiful girl once told me that "sometimes, it is best to look ugly, so that whichever guy you attract - is more likely to be truthful and sincere than a guy attracted and enamoured by your looks". An interesting theory once again. I wonder if this condradicts the white cat theory and the superior grey cat theorems.

As we reach forth andn grasp the past, I can't help but remember that all these prefects would be seated in front, to watch us recite the pledge, "With the Strength and Guidance of God.... serve the school.... Amen". If I can recall correctly after so long. I wonder if the meaning of time actually dissuades us to dissolve all the bad past memories and to subconsciously keep only the good ones for our times past? Perhaps that is why every NSman usually describes his stint in NS as "good"? Because the mind does a wipe of all the bad details and glosses them over to reveal only the good parts? I wonder at times, from the batch of prefects that I was in. What really is bad? Is it late coming behavior or smoking or clubbing? Or is it getting drunk on a pavement at 4.30a.m in the morning, failing courses in university or flirting with a good friend's girlfriend. The ethical considerations at times are tremendous.

There was a particular prefect from the legendary Singapore Chinese Girls School. In those days when we learn the means of integration and differentiation. The Differential of Sine was Cosine, and the Integral of Cosine was Negative Sine. But how to remember and not be confused? Easy. "Singapore Chinese Girls School". SCGS. The first two give the Sine-Cosine Identities. However, the integral of cosine gave a negative sine. Easier to remember. "Counter-Strike" has a hyphen in between the letters. So we'd always remember to put in the minus sign. Its amusing that even at higher levels of mastery of mathematics - such basic ideals of a minus sign can still trip up an entire equation or exam to say the least. Could a minus sign in theory shift a person's destiny and the path of his life? I guess it all builds up and is all relative.

She's a beautiful girl. Tall. Note. Tall. She plays tennis exceedingly well. One of the more important tennis players on the SCGS team. Enraptured by her beauty, porcelain like smooth skin of a typical Chinese girl. It is no surprise that after the investiture was over, we were still talking about her and making sure we had her email address. Of course, ending with @hotmail.com was a particularly compliment of the times. No home number, No Handphone number. Pager? I'm not sure, though rumour were floating around. Besides, her school was just next to ours, that would be a year later on thence. I do wonder about the times past.

Acknowledeably, I've said this many times before and my experience in the most nonsense college in the country confirms it - MGS girls are smart. Yet I know my mei won't be too happy should I say this too often. Well, I do say that SCGS girls are smart too. I remember when we got back our O level results for chinese in August 2000. We were so happy just to get a D7 for chinese. Apparently, our neighbour SCGS had only one girl in the entire cohort with an E8. We had countless F9s in the class. Yours truly, being one of them. Welll, back to thaht beautiful girl again. I never knew which JC she went too - though some said Raffles, other said VJ, another claimed NJ. Doesn't matter. That is of a time's past now. Education. Or is it systematic academic discrimination? Just as there is price discrimination in Economics, why not academic discrimination?

Not too long ago, I checked through another website for social networking and realised that she is now in BROWN University. Indeed. How times have changed and how times have passed. Providence, Rhode Island indeed. The Richest Girl in Singapore is there too. I guess the benefits of being in an ivy league institution, beyond the academics, is theh social networking environment of wealthy, or extremely intelligent people - or both at the least. Besides, it is a good springboard to a life filled with opportunities. You could hide besides me, maybe for a while. Then againk, I won't tell no one her name. It should be ridiculously easy to guess though. I compare and contrast this to many of the prefects that I knew that never made it to JC. Not even the most nonsense college in the country - not even that 20 points cut off. I wonder. Life has certainly changed so much. Is this the era of the women who is many times more dominant than man can be? I believe a long long time ago, perhaps 94 or maybe again in 97, Life! published a controversial article - "Men: The Weaker Sex". Its an interesting theory in social analysis and intellectual discourse that does deserve its attention in women's studies and diversity glass ceiling understandings. Brilliance of time has passed.

Friendster is still one of the greatest nonsensicalities of our time. A hundred years ago, I believe even HG Wells would not have forseen a world so connected electronically. It is a great way to check up relationship statuses. I realised that many people have moved on and are really happy attached now. No more Single as I'm told. A old classmate is now attached to the dream girl of another friend in the exact same class in secondary school. I wonder at times if and does money play in the equation? One friend is a extravagantly rich, yet tapered in humility. Anotherr with humour, yet works and toils as a waiter during his part time to supplement the family income. Food for though indeed, the intracacies and complexities of life do understandably make us wonder and ponder about destiny, overal purpose and perhaps existence itself. I leave you think and wonder at times. Diplomacy to be nice is a good thing. Perhaps a necessary evil that it "leads guys on" to think and draw upon flawed conclusions. Nevertheless, she is still happily attached and just radiates beauty with stillness of heart.

Additively, sometimes, we must just call out upon ourselves to wonder if the nonstop body grooving and sliming between persons at Zouk on Mambo night is really worth its weight in opportunistic cost. As a person grows older, especially myself - it is true that we get more and more set in our ways. Being the highly unexcitable person. Its just normal for me to be satisfied with at ime of listening to Yo-Yo Ma's latest CD or else to surf friendster and once again - ponder the intracacies of life itself.

Do you read this still?
