The Hand In The Glove - Final Update

The Hand In The Glove - Final Update

I remember with much humour, one fine day after PE lessons in the sports complex. I went to change back into the white and blue in the boy's toilet in the Sports Complex. Yes, the building that each of us paid 30 dollars and 90 cents inclusive of GST in order to prop up its functionality. I think its now something along the line of 31 dollars and 50 cents? Thanks to an increase in the GST? Nevertheless, I quickly put on my top as I was late for the next class - Economics with The Frankenstein Monster. EKERNORMIKS was a dreaded horror in those days before I finally tossed the subject out of the window.

I dumped my uniform on a shared space with a few other JC2 students, who were already changing there. Finally I got dressed and when I pulled on my AC pants, I realised that they were loose. Incredibly loose. So loose that after I let go of them, the pants just feel back to my feet! I thought I might have ripped one end of the pants or something along that line, or maybe for some strange reason or other - my pants had grown two sizes while I was away for PE lessons. Most AC pants have this "option" of expandability or contratability with regards to two small flaps at the side that button in or out one inch on both sides. So I tightened these flaps and thankfully, the pants fit.

By the time I walked out of the toilet, I had already lost sight of the rest of the class. Since I was running late, I thought that I might give a call to one of the guys to let Frankenstein Monster know of my latecoming. I put my hand into the pocket and I picked out a phone that wasn't mine! Uh Oh! Just at that time when I was in a slight daze, some of my class guys appeared from behind and I told them,

"I think I wore somebody else's pants in the toilet".

The rest burst out into laughter for a moment. I laughed too at the moment of infancy. It was quite funny. I guess someway or another, I had unexpectedly swapped pants with someone in the toilet. The one that I was now wearing was super super baggy. I think given my frame size at that time, putting in seven or eight chickens would not be a problem. It was too baggy and threatened to fall off my hips at anyone time. Gingerly I grasped hold of the side as I walked from the Sports Complex back to the East Lodges (Where Frankenstein was already waiting with his Titan's Sword of Slaughter). One of my class guys suggested that I take the phone I had in "my" pants and call my own handphone. Why didn't I think of that? So I whipped out the handphone - an old, ancient cheesy motorola by the standards of those days and proceeded to call my handphone.

A voice answered on the line with a squeal:

"Your freaking tight pants are killing me!!!" I heard tremendously laughter in the background as well. It was as if the whole class was laughing that this poor guy. So I asked him what was his pants size. He said "42". Hmmm, nowonder, I was wearing a size 34 AC pants in those days. I was still the skinny and scrawny fella that didn't have it in my genes to bulk up in size then.

"You're a 34?!!! Oh my goodness! Come quickly! I don't think I can wear your pants for another five minutes!!!!".

"Where are you now?" I asked

"Come over to NL15! Let's swap our pants! Argh!!!!" And even more laughter was heard in the background. I walked to NL15 alone, the rest of the guys heading like sheep for the slaughter towards the legendary EL6. I walked over casually, almost enjoying the feeling of wearing ultra-baggy pants. Finally when I got to the classroom, I was greeted by this JC2 guy who I had earlier seen in the toilet in the sports complex. "Oh Its you ah!!!!" he screamed! By this time I had opened the door to his classroom with a geography (I think, else history) tutorial in full swing. His class girls were all seated together and they laughed and giggled ear piercing shrieks of scorn. It was so funny. The tutor of the class just stood rooted to the ground, visibly unsure of the growing drama that was about to happen before her.

"Let's swap our pants here now!". And he proceeded to undo the zip and the clip of his (my) pants. All his class girls went into a shriek of "EEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!". And started to look away with disgusted looks on their faces. It was so funny. Here I am skiving time off class and watching a guy take of his pants in front of a bunch of girls. But before he could go any further than that, his tutor interrupted him and ordered him to leave the classroom to change out of his AC Pants.

At this time, the rest of the North Lodges were not in use. But the doors were locked. Being the "ever good and informative senior" that ACJC J2 students are known for, he proceeded to teach me how to unlock the windows of the NL from the outside. Woah, never seen of before stuff indeed. Truly the most nonsense college in the country! I climbed through the window with him and we swapped out pants in the fraction of a second. Having to go to the toilet in those days would mean us taking a long detour walking across half of the school. At that time, ACJC was undergoing construction and there was no direct route from one side of the school to the next, we had to walk by one long circuit like roundabout to get to the nearest toilet. He wore back his pants and I was glad to fit back into my size 34. Handphone and all.

"This is such a cheesy phone! You should change it".

He nodded and said "Ya I'm going to the singtel shop after I zao school at lunch time, thanks man, I knew it was a bad choice"

And then he burts glamourously into his class once again. Acting high and mighty. And his class gave him a round of applause. I think tutorial that day was cancelled as no one was in the mood to study. I walked down the the canteen, got myself the lemonade (at sixty cents no less!) and then drank slowly and burst into Frankenstein's EKONOMIKZ lesson. It was fantastic, and I smirked ina visibly pleased and self-satisfied manner. I never forgot this day. As a JC student, I preferred to "travel light", I only brought the bare essentials to school - not even the necessary books most of the time.

"Alwyn, did you bring your econs 10-year-series"
"er no?"

He stretched for this hand, palm facing upwards and sniggered:

"ONE DOLLAR..."

The Nonsense I go through in school every day.

Conclusions

I wanted to end this blog on April the 30th, but due to certain unforseen circumstances, I decided to let it go on the 13th. I don't know what else to say, but maybe I'll write one or two more posts just to sum everything up. In such cases, well sometimes certain measures of pants don't fit us very well. Likewise, I'm not very sure about my "hobby" right now. I know that it is a waste to let it all go just like this. The knowledge and practice that I have wrought of the last year has been quite valuable, and quite good indeed. Nothing fantastic, yet its quite resonable I'd say.

Many people have asked me to reconsider my decision, to rethink my decision as well as cheered me on not to give up what I so love to pursue for the past one year. While I know many of you who read my blog and still land on it even after the last post have told me that my pictures are good - the thing is that, I don't really agree. Popular Galleries at pbase.com. Top rated galleries at Photo.net. High ranked and well critiqued pictures at PhotoSig.com (Nico's favourite) as well as outstanding pictures from Trekearth.com. These are just a small smattering of the sites that have an enormously good range of pictures. Stuff that which I can never compare too. I can't let myself benchmark with other non-photographic enthusisasts I guess, I must see how my creativity and vision matches up with others on an international and global scale. Especially so such barriers being broken down in cyberspace.

Its been one year, yet there has been no vision. No creativity, no photographic philosophy. It is disappointing. While I get much praise from the comments that are sometiems left on this blog. It is very sad to say that many people around me do not support my hobby and laugh it off as a waste of time. Quite discouraging and disparaging actually. So I'm not really sure. 15 weeks ago, I was at my peak when I photographed the ACJC orientation. Yet now even though it is the most popular gallery on my photos page. I feel that out of those 200 odd pictures there. Only a tiny handful of 2 or 3 can be considered to be "good". The rest are just nonsense shots.

I've finally taken the libery to edit the last gallery and post it up here. This is just what I believe to be all the pictures that I've taken this year that can reach an ok or so-so standard in my eyes. Not all of them are good anyway and I guess out of the whole thing, perhaps only 4 out of the 50 images posted there are really any good at all. Nevertheless it has been a good try. Right now, the passion, love as well as enjoyment of this hobby have left me and it is with deep regret that I no longer carry my camera around whereever I go. I see no point at the end of the day.

After I wrote that last post, I went to watch the rugby match on thursday, only to see ACSI drop the title that they have held since I was in secondary 1. Its very sad. Everything seemed deja-vu actually. Then again, my hopes are gathered together as I hope that ACJC will reclaim the honor and its crowning glory lost last year in four to six weeks time. I just guess that I won't be around to catch the match and watch it anyway. The best picture from the match last week on the AC side is seen as the top picture on my blog now. The best emotive picture is the one where the Saint Andrew's player with the broken hand lifts up the championship trophy with both joy and pain in his eyes. That is what I call an emotional picture.

Photographically, I didn't really enjoy photographing the match. My camera's autofocus is too too slow and gave me so many blurred shots. This is the reason why you might see so many static action shots in the gallery, but not any real ones that the core of rugby. I did what I could and I guess that its not too bad. Yet I felt no more pleasure or joy in taking those pictures. It felt, unnatural and draining to my soul.

Well then, I will reconsider my decision and rethink my thoughts over this issue. I'll just need time. Too much has happened for me to enjoy taking pictures anymore. Too many disappointments and sad circumstances have come my way this year and as a side effect, this is the one hobby that has to go. For now. Perhaps someday it will return to me. Thank you so much for your support, all those that encouraged me and asked me to think twice about this. Just give me some time, and I will explain everything to you when the time is right. God bless.
