The Chin Up Bar...
By some strange means or other, I somehow surfed through a series of blog links and ended up at Lifeng's, the current president of the student's council in the most nonsense college in the country. She made a passing mention about having an orientation for the 2nd Intake. Interesting. That was about 2.30 in the morning, so with a little time to spare that same day itself, I decided to head on down to snap a few pictures. If possible. Orientation is always so fun, yet its lamentable that the first intake people get to enjoy such a richer, much more varied and a definitely very much more fun orientation as compared to the 2nd Intake folks.

Writings On The Wall
Nevertheless, I remember being posted into ACJC after the JAE results were released. It was good. The culmulation of a year's worth of hard work had finally come to pass. I remember meeting a whole slew of people back in the badminton hall, during the time when I had my "2nd Intake orientation". Basically it wasn't anything much - Just a speech from el-e-double-n, the customarily one that he repeats year in year out. As well as some casual introduction sessions. I don't even remember a single person who was in my OG for the 2nd Intake. That's with the exception of Mr Baey (Look up there for his link). He was my primary 1 class mate. And we had be "separated" for so many years in secondary school. Oh well. What's new? That's life...
All the pictures here were shot with the 50mm lens. What happened a few weeks ago was that I accidentally dropped the lens. And basically broke off the filter that I had on it. The autofocus mechanism died instantly. I was about to write off the lens just before I asked Nico to have a go at dismantling it and attempting to fix it for me. And in some strange fashion or other - Nico actually managed to fix it. The lens still works well. And it is tack sharp. No complains. I realise that the more I take pictures, the more inclined I am to prime lenses - they are sharper, faster to focus, easier to compose with, small, light, cheap and have nice wide apertures. It is very strange that I have a high end wide angle zoom that seldom gets used, except for landscapes. And the cheapo 50mm doing most of my photographic work. Irony indeed.

Registration Process
Well, I guess nothing's changed in ACJC, except that they've finally installed a new track. The days of a blackish, literally "run-down" track have now been replaced with a new track that gleams with a happy hue of saturated red. Wow, so this where all the money from the Eternal-School-Building-Fund goes too...
After strolling around school for awhile, realising that all the OGs are practically out for lunch save two. I walked right into The Hub. Lao Shi and I used to joke in Chinese B classes. "Lao Shi, I hub, you hub, we hub. Wo Men Du Shu in the hub Hao Mah?" And Lao Shi would give a confused and puzzled reply... "Hub? Se Mo Hub?" And L-Squared and I would be rocking with laughter in our seats. The hub was a bustling of activity - registration for subject combinations and all. I'm very surprised to know that the cut off for science this year is 8 points. I don't really know what to make of that - is that a good thing or is that a bad thing? 8 points is just crazy! I doubt anyone in my class would have made it to ACJC if the cut off for science was 8 points for our year. And from 12 points, now its 10 points to take up four subjects.

Deep Thoughts
Woah Stress! I mean, I could hear people appealing to do four subjects, else others calling frantically on their phones. And of course, appeals too were being entertained at The Hub. Which makes me recall an incident, on the first day of school, in the most nonsense college in the country. It happened in the Mezza9 floor, where there was to be some registration or other with regards to particulars and subject combinations. I was wandering around (in my ever usual and typical fashion) when I came across a guy attempting to appeal:
"Madam, I would like to appeal to enter into ACJC"
"Ok, how many points did you get for your L1R5?"
"Fifteen"
"Ok, What is the reason for appealing then?"
"I missed the JAE"
MISSED THE JAE? That qualifies in my book as sheer ignorance.
"Ok, you missed the JAE. Why?"
"Oh, I was overseas, holiday in Bali..."
And I guess, we all know what the answer is - a flat plain out rejection.
"I'm sorry to say, but we have absolutely no spaces in this school right now. Please appeal to other colleges".

Clarifications
Besides this, I recall that for my junior year. There was something like 400 over appeals after the JAE results were released? In the sense, having this "first three months" thing is good. As well as bad. Go figure out. Its sad to see people uproot from all their happy bonds and memories in orientation and head off for some other place in life - displaced by others. Divisions in the first intake and 2nd intake people anyone? I guess that sounds *particularly* familiar to certain people who read this post. Not that it matters anymore anyway.
Pretty much, this time round, orientation was a very much subdued one. Two days. I didn't really hear the endless loop of Blame It On The Boogie by the guy whose being charged in a court right now. Nor did I have the chance to soak into the vibes of Superstar once again. Everything looked vaguely familiar yet distant at the same time. What's wrong with me man. The games were just four stations. And they were all held at the basketball court. The field being out of use because MGS was having their track and field meet at the same time slot. Such is the coincidences as well as ironies of life.

Discussions
After a while, I got sick of photographing all the action. It felt kinda... dry. As well as sorta lacking in "something". I ended up taking alot of pictures of the few student councillors in the games area for some strange reason or other. Portraits and stuff. Eventually, I hope to do some serious photography in action and sports. And finally branch off just into portraiture - which is something I would gladly be happy to master even if it was the one and only kind of camera picture taking that I could fully handle. Black and White portraits, should... ideally, capture the not just the heart of a person. But the inner soul as well. =)

Distraction

d.k

Orientation goes on...

Watching a stage performance.

Swimming Pool

Everyone looks pretty bored, actually.

One volley from Raffles.

One retaliation from AC...

One ofthe games: Scissors, Paper, Stone. Winner grabs a plastic cup, scoops water from a pail and tosses it at the other party. Loser grabs and umbrella and attempts to save his or herself.

Better idea?

Ouch. And the waterbomb's still on the way...

He can still smile after being doused in paint. Ha Ha Ha.

A cheer from probably the most enthusiastic OG around the place.

From left to right: (1)Here come the hockey guys, running down the new track. (2) Carrying chairs to set up one of the games. (3) Filling up pails of water for the waterbombs.

Making waterbombs. One by one.

Ahhhhhh!!!!!
I did not photography the 2nd day of the orientation, having some else to do. However, when I went for dinner with a good AC friend in the evening. Burger King was flooded with AC orientation people. I guess that is why the BK management paints the outlet yellow and blue in color. Oh well... I don't think I will do this again. Maybe just one more time and no more?
But Remember! The Best Is Yet To Be!
