I'm trying to inspire my brother to work hard and to do well for his upcoming O-level exams this year. I certainly hope that he will be the third Normal Academic student from Barker to make it to ACJC. I just try to give him a little motivation, some form of a push to inspire him to work hard for his future. But I guess he does not take it in his stride.
My brother isn't poor academically. It is just that he is extremely, extravangantly, massively, horrifically, completely, maximumly lazy. I cannot think of more words to describe the depth of his uttermost laziness. Its quite sad to know that he has the potential. Just that he purposely chooses not to work towards it. He is extremely deluded into thinking that the girls he has in his life now will be his wives of tomorrow. He is so apathetic to his studies that he might as well be absent from school for the whole year.
My brother. He is SEVENTEEN this year and is still terribly immature. Often I ask him to read the newspapers. But really, he has not a single inkling of what really goes on around in the world. He hasn't even started to read the newspapers. Nor has he deviated from CARTOONS (He insists on call them "Anime" - Is Pokemon Anime?) My goodness! The degree of his poor attitude is horrifying.
I'm very dissapointed in him. He is really the grief of my mother as well as the heartache of my father. My family would be so much happier if he just worked hard to do well in his studies. Imagine the fact that for every tuition teacher that my mom has got for him. Every single one of the tuition teachers have stoutly refused to teach my brother after just anything from a month to three months at the most. It is THAT BAD.
Its quite sad to know that my parents constantly argue over him. I don't understand why they are so immensely divided over his studies. On one hand, we could let him fail all the way in school and end up at the bottom rug of society. On the other, we can chose to suffer through and push him to do well in his studies. But at the end of the day. My brother refuses to study.
Its amazing how he manages to find so many excuses not to study. He has every single thing to do from feeding the cat all the way to arranging his room, calling his friend, listening to "this song". Waiting for the heater to warm up, waiting to take a shower. I Just taken his shower, watching this show. Waiting to have dinner, need to check the computer, need to clear his table and it just goes on. I could write a book-full of his excuses.
In the end, very very very little time is actually spent with his book staring at him. I can say that he gets about maybe 10 minutes of quality studying every day. Saturdays, Sundays and Fridays not included. And it is quite sad that when he is studying, someone will sms him and he will call that person and they will have a two hour chat on the phone. After which my brother "packs his bags" and goes to sleep.
I've observed that my brother never really studies during tuition. Most often he is just chatting with the tutor and all of the tutors are very happy just to sit down with a kid who can talk and get paid for doing so. Like I once said. My brother and I a diametrically opposite. We are really really really really really really really really really opposite. North pole and South Pole. Light matter and Dark matter. Supernova and Black Hole. Black and White. Yin and Yang. We are so opposite that people in my social group are very surprised to see that I have such a brother and voluntarily chose not to mix with him.
And he often complains to my mom that "my friends don't like him". Quite sad to say that it is so true. I can't mix with any of his friends either!
My brother is just such a shallow person. He places extreme emphasis on looks. Very vain would be a very mild discription to describe the way he meticulously styles his hair before going to school every day. He often bugs my dad for more money just so that he can wear the most fashionable pair of shoes to school. Not to mention that when it comes to sunglasses. Only OAKLEYS will do for him. That is after he inisisted on wearing contact lenses. And for the part that most people who know me know that I do not even gel my hair!
I guess he is just growing up to be a playboy. Every week he asks my dad for money so that he can take another girl out to the movies for hours on end and return late in the night. Not exactly the way to go since its a really important year for him. And yes, he choses to go out with girls on a sunday rather than to head to church - telling my mum that the "cellgroup doesn't like him". How sad. Might as well say "God doesn't want me in church" right? I can just imagine what "hand movements" he does in the cinema with the girls he goes out with.
My brother is really a very shallow person. He can't accept any form of criticism nor can he speak with depth on practically any topic - except those on girls. Somehow, his friendster profile testimony says that he is a "BGR counsellor" to his friends. Well, like I said, I can't mix around with any of his friends either. They are simply a bunch of weird freaks to me. (Hahahaha!). I think he's asking my dad when he can get piercings as well as tattoos since all his friends have them. Thank God my dad refuses him to get anything of the like done - yet. And he wants to join Police. How screwed up can his values get?
I'm just quite sad that I have really - such a screwed up brother. Nevermind if he is messed up. The fact is that he stoutly refuses to change his behavior for the better. Insisting on having things done his way and choosing to ignore my mum's pleas for him to change. Ah well. Like I said. I have a messed up family. One big sticking point is defnitely my brother. He just causes so much friction with the family.
I never got along well with my brother. That's the simple truth and fact. We are so opposite that we just can't stand each other. Imagine he'll fight with me for the use of the toilet first thing in the morning. Sigh. Its quite sad. Very very lamentable indeed. I guess he'll be living off payouts from my Dad for a long long time at his rate.
No doubt we are trying very hard to create opportunities for him. Giving him tution, sending him for classes. Providing him with transport as well as giving him all the necessary things for him to do well in life. Even getting him a place to study in Australia in the hopes that the change of environment will do him some benefit. But I believe that at the end of the day, my dad is just throwing all his precious hard earned money down the drain. My Dad need not work 14 hours a day if not for my brother.
There is only so much we can do to create opportunities for him as well as to motivate him to do well in his studies. But at the end of the day. I guess we are all wasting our time to the our own loss. As much as I don't wish to pass judgement on my brother. Its quite sad to see him causing so much conflict, sadness in my family whilst being a constant source of disspointment to me, a grief to my mother and a big heartache to my father.
Praying for him can only do so much. He is just so unwilling to go forth and seize all the opportunites that few other people have in front of him. Maybe he'll only find out one day the hard way when he has to scrape at the bottom of the barrel to ek out a living in society.
