Spent last night downloading ACJC from Jamie's site! She has a gold mine of pictures! Slept only at about 1 plus.
Vesak Day
Literally dragged myself out of bed today, even after 7 hours of sleep. This is unacceptable. I must ONLY rely on 3 hours of sleep a night and charge through the day like an army commando! Rest assured I will train and toughen up my physical and mental capabilities to that of a killing machine minus the killing.
I have this dream, not realistic I would say honestly, but it would be something I would never mind pursuing in this lifetime: To Join the Commandos after getting my university degree, hopefully I'll be sent to OCS, to become a Senior Commando. Perhaps with 10 or 20 years, rise to rank of Colonel and be part of the SOF, Special Operations Force, Singapore's elite Counter Terrorist Unit. They are even better than the Police STAR Team. The SOF trains with the German GSG-9, various US Navy SEAL teams, the Rangers, the Green Berets and other classified special forces around the world. Perhaps even the World Best SAS and Delta Force.
When I saw two planes crash into the World Trade Center on Sept 11, 2001, My heart, not my mind, made a pledge to forever defend this country with my life. No matter what the cost and how bad it would look on paper. But then again. I would be happier to just work in a Church and do "God's Work".
I had cellgroup at Vanessa's place today. It was rather better than most other cellgroups thus far. Though I didn't feel like going as usual, this time dad drove me to Van's place. How could I refuse? Perhaps God wanted to aid me in my poor mood. I don't understand why my desire for God is always high on a sunday after service, and almost dead literally my mid-week. This is spiritually unacceptable.
Merf's message was on reaching out to the lost. I'm really bad at evangelizing. I have an attitude of indifference, an attitude of self-righteousness and self-centeredness. I hate my attitude! I despise it to the extent that I can say that I hate myself for having such attitudes.
Praise and Worship was noticeably better since we started off with a 10 minute prayer meeting and then proceeding to pray in pairs. As usual, I prayed with George. He and I prayed for Spiritual Hunger, Evagelism, Cellgroup growth and I can't remember what was the last item on the prayer list. Merf showed us the brochure that the National Library Board had printed. It featured his band, The Moren Tea Estate, as a featured performer of the month. Merf's band will be perfoming at the Esplanade, Theatres on the Bay, this saturday for a 1 and a 1/2 hour gig. I'll be there to support him, then rush to Lim Chu Kang for my attachment.
Van's mum cooked us lunch, curry chicken, her speciality. George brought a tray of his fried food. He had specially woken up at 4.30 in the morning to prepare the food and cook it for us. He was telling me how tired he was physically when he came, but after praising and worshipping God, he felt so physically refreshed. I agree. I feel so much more energised after a service. Don't know why, but has to be God again.
I was supposed to meet Kelvin, T Squared at about 1.45 at Dhoby Ghaut MRT station. Janice and I flagged down a taxi, she asked that the taxi driver send us to two places: SMU and MRT. The taxi driver was not just good. He was REALLY good. He knew exactly which part of SMU Janice wanted to go. And to think that Janice almost wanted to pray to God for a taxi driver who would know the way to SMU.
I had a frank chat with the driver. He's an old man who has a really open outlook to life. He speaks about the SARS honestly, tells me not to worry about the IMH scare as this is more or less due to the hygiene in the mental institution. His illustration: Tell a mentally unsound person not to touch his face, would he understand? And the Health Ministry has asked people not to touch their face after pressing lift buttons or the like until one's hands have been thoroughly washed.
I wish to commend this driver, SH 8754, can't remember his name though. He has actually given up 3 working days this month just to take the temperature of his fellow drivers and to issue them the sticker. He told me that tomorrow would be his 4th. In addition, he supplies a free lunch to those drivers who drop by in the afternoon for the second temperature reading. He told me he hopes to be reimbursed of about 420 dollars by the company later. Funny, he said it is not nice to use the term "compensation" in such instances. Interesting indeed.
When I arrived at Dhoby Ghaut, I called T square who said that he was still at Khatib, OK, so I waited. Then he called me and asked me where was I. He later said that the meeting place had been changed to Orchard in the sms I sent to him. Damn, should have taken the sms a little more seriously, since I called him on the taxi and told him that I would be meeting him at Dhoby Ghaut. The SMS was sent prior to this! Damn. So I took a 106 up to border and surprise surprise! Bumped into Mervyn, Ivan and James!
Wow, we just kept talking and talking about NS life, ACJC LIFE, girls(usual hot topic) and assorted nonsense. James and Ivan wanted to go shopping for clothes so we spent the whole day just browsing and window shopping in Orchard. We went from Borders to Wisma to Liat Towers to Taka to Paragon and to The Heeren. They didn't buy anything but just spent time admiring some fine clothes from British India, Polo, Zara and 77th street.
It's wonderful to talk to guys that have been through AC life with you, not withstanding the fact that Mervyn and Ivan were from Gym Instructor's Corps as well. Mervyn's my cycling partner and Ivan's like a GENIUS that I learnt stuff from.
Ivan is one of the top 20 smartest persons in the country aged 19 years old this year. He was one of the few who qualified, after MOE approval to take 3 S-Papers. He's a genius in Mathematics, Economics and Chemistry. His physics isn't the greatest, but I can certainly say that it was just a notch below Winston Chin's. Really, who gets AABB for promos and AAAB for Prelims? He's so smart that the army has posted him to be a counselor's assistant, to work his brains and avoid "wastage". Naturally, he go 4 A's. Absolutely brilliant intellectual person whom I can relate to on many many issues.
He told me about Wan Ting's website today, just casually mentioned it and said that it was really really good and impressive. I asked him for the URL. He told me he forgot and to ask James. James said he doesn't log his history and hence doesn't have the URL. Nevermind. I can easily find the URL on my own using my own "resources" (The term mei prefers to use).
As the bunch of us were leaving Taka at about 6 plus, some girl in a blue spaghetti strapped top called out to me. I was busy discussing philosophy with Mervyn so I didn't hear. Ivan and T Squared started making a HUGE fuss that some girl had called out to me. I told them to just heck it now that she was out of sight and stuff.
Funny, I actually changed my mind on the spur of the moment and went to look for the girl! Normally, I wouldn't even care. My low self-esteem wouldn't allow me to go look for a girl cos I had this feeling of worthlessness that I wouldn't be able to talk to her, carry on a conversation and stuff, basically just give a very bad impression of myself to her and turn her off from me forever.
I walked at a fast pace with T Squared to look for that girl. Couldn't find her though. I was sweaty and went home. Perhaps she's really good looking or something, that's why they made a big fuss about me going to look for her. Or maybe it was just a big joke meant to be played on me. Who Knows?
As I broke off from the group, I didn't get the chance to bid James, Ivan and Mervyn goodbye. Later, when I called James, he said that they were still in Orchard, just finished dinner and that they had been waiting in British India all along. Nevertheless, I had to go home for dinner. So no more fellowship!
About Wan Ting
Wan Ting's one of the top ten most pretty girls in ACJC, If I'm not wrong, she's number 10, or number 9. She's really really good looking! She has big eyes (its in her eyes!), a very friendly personality and good character. Lots of guys in ACJC liked her as she was only like pretties in the whole SA combi after Lynn Chou. Lots of guys indeed. Including me. Of course, when I put my feet back on solid ground I knew that I'm not quite up to her "standard". So I just ignored her for another 10 months or so till I managed to talk to her on IRC and chat with her in class one day during F maths Lecture.
She's a very nice person to talk to. Unlike some pretty girls, they just go "ya", nod their heads and smile at your "feeble" attempts to impress them with your words. At least with Ting (that's what I call her), she actually makes an effort to talk to you and carry on the conversation. During my one and only chance to talk to her during F maths lecture, the week before she dropped the subject. I talked with her for about an hour plus (Einstein's Theory of Relativity: Felt like only Five Minutes). At least everytime I bumped into her at school I could just chat with her for a a few seconds with her smiling at me! Its a really nice feeling when a girl smiles at you! Conversations were very brief, every now and then, but somehow I managed to gain a somewhat distant friendship with her.
Once, i talked to her, whilst walking from the lobby all the way to EL 2, about 60m or so. Nicholas later came up to me said, "Woah! Girlfriend Ah!". Yea, somehow, because of her friendly personality, I can communicate well with her. And thank God she doesn't exactly has violent moodswings or sudden changes in temperament. Damn, I wish what Nick said was true. Such and IDEAL girl indeed.
Later last year, I invited her for my birthday. She's gladly accepted. Interesting to note that she isn't like connected with any particular cliche of friends or group of people, so no qualms about going to a guy's birthday when she hardly knows the guy (me).
She did come, I still remember, in a black tank top and jeans. Simple yet elegant. I didn't talk much to her except tell her that I would like to work in a church in future. Funny, she didn't really talk much to any of my other guests, even though she like knows most of them a little. And its so kind of her to sit NEXT to me during dinner. Damn. I feel that I'm putting too much emotional attachment to girls with looks! Lord HELP me!!!!!
When everyone had left except Mark Kay (Best JC chess player in Singapore as of last year, who stays like a stone's throw away), I opened up my gifts in front of him. All the girls who came gave me something. ALL the guys didn't!
When I opened my present, my jaw dropped! It was one of those "tatty teddy bears"? Probably cost her about 20 bucks? I don't expect a present, all the more she spends so much on a present on a guy she hardly knows. Sincere? Perhaps being nice is just part of her character. Mark was SO jealous! He made a fuss of the whole thing. Ting told me once that Mark once liked her. Perhaps that's why.
My mom saw the present and STOLE it from me to put it beside HER bed, citing reasons that it was too cute! Of course, I quickly took the bear back after a few day's absence and then stashed it away in the box the bear came in.
I still have that bear. And I'll keep it for as long as I live. God bless You Ting. You may not consider me a friend. But I consider you one.
I'll put up a pic of her below. She's with Huy, a Vietnamese scholar. I'll talk about him at another time. Because should I talk about him now, I might as well type a few more pages worth of text.
